Football with Flavor

Football season is so close we can smell it, literally! Fantasy drafts are complete, and the lineups are set. Picks, bets, and predictions are all in for week 1 which leaves just one decision left to make – what do we eat while we immerse ourselves into the first Sunday of action for the 2024 season?

Whether you spend Sundays on your couch at home, at a buddy’s house or set up shop at a high top at your local bar – your next big decision is what to stuff your face with as you take in the much-anticipated Week 1 matchups. Pizza, nachos, loaded fries? All the above or something else entirely? It’s a long season and you’ll have a chance to try everything, but myself, I’m a wing guy – through and through.

So many flavors and styles, it’s like a different meal every time! If you’re part of #BillsMafia I’m sure you go straight for the Buffalo – though this year you better order it mild because there is nothing spicy about this team. ESPNs player poll labeled your QB the most overrated player in the NFL. Thankfully, a good Buffalo wing is still somehow underrated on gameday.

Marylanders love an Old Bay wing as much as they love their Ravens. Chris Berman doesn’t call M&T Bank Stadium “The Big Crabcake” for nothing, as summer closes and the crab feasts slow down, the Sunday gatherings become more about the Super Bowl contending Ravens because as we know “Crabcakes and football! that’s what Maryland does!”

Garlic Parmesan, Teriyaki, Mango Habanero or just plain hot – there is a flavor for everyone and like many of the NFL teams this year, they can be hit or miss. Cincinnati, Houston, Miami, Atlanta and Chicago could all taste the postseason or just be flat out (over) cooked.

The one flavor we can all agree on is and will always be BBQ. Smoky, Spicy, Sweet or Tangy, it never disappoints, and you can count on it to be there in the end. Its no coincidence that Kansas City has some of the best BBQ in the United States, along with the best football team. Head Coach Andy Reid is no stranger to some of the best food America has to offer, going from Philly cheesesteaks to Kansas City BBQ, his palate may be the only thing better than his ability to coach – having won 2 straight Super Bowls and pursuing a record breaking three-peat.

Football is officially back, and it just makes the food taste better and the beer a little colder. It’ll be BBQ pork belly burnt ends & hot wings for me on Sunday – let me know in the comments what you’re eating, drinking and who you’re rooting for this Sunday. Here’s to some great food & drinks and an even better season. Cheers!
